Kairan’s Black History Month Hero 2017

My Black History Month Hero is Barack Obama due to my admiration of his leadership during his presidency. I truly believe that everybody has a responsibility to lead by example and understand that it’s not about one single person being accountable for all change but it is about one person inspiring and leading to achieve. We need to internalise this idea of excellence. Not many folks spend a lot of time trying to be excellent. On November 4, 2008, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois was elected president of the United States over Senator John McCain of Arizona. Obama became the 44th president, and the first African American to be elected to that... Read More

Nichola’s Black History Month Hero

I’d like to tell you some background on my Hero before I move onto why I choose them. Born Steveland on the 13th May 1950, Saginaw, Michigan. Steveland was born prematurely, Steveland was placed in an incubator for life support. However, an excess of oxygen resulted in the scarring and detachment of his retina leading to a condition known as Retinopathy of Prematurity which resulted in his blindness. A fine harmonica, drum and piano player by the age of 10, but it was his voice that got him signed to Motown a year later. Without seeing the images would you of guessed who i was referring too? During the 60’s,... Read More

18 days into not smoking “and I’m feeling good”

Having been a smoker on and off for just over 30 years (when I was told as a juvenile teenager that it would ‘stump my growth’), I thought it was the answer I was looking for – to be ‘in with the gang’ and to stop growing – 5ft 11inches, weighing 7 ½ stone, I stood out from the crowd and I didn’t like it. Now, all these years later, I have realised that I was standing out for the wrong reasons – I have compromised by health and wellbeing for smoking… I’ve not exercised as much, yet I’ve carried on smoking, I haven’t watched my diet to ‘eat well’,... Jonna’s Black History Month Hero 2017

Nelson Mandela I’m not quite sure why I am so drawn to South Africa, I have often wondered if I descended from this beautiful country in a former life. Maybe it was following his release on TV in the February (11th) of 1990 that intrigued me, as a teenager I couldn’t quite comprehend why he had been imprisoned for speaking out… My passion for South Africa continued and I spent the best part of 2 years living there in my twenties; and they really were two years of living – like I never have done before. I followed a great deal of Mandela’s history as I explored the country and... Read More

World Mental Health Day 2017

Having searched for a while as to what is the best ‘happy’ picture to use for our World Mental Health post today, I’ve settled on this from Chibird… why? Because it simply sets the scene for what I wanted to share… Someone, somewhere will believe in you – whatever your circumstances, whatever you’re going through, and sometimes that’s all we need. Far too often we see and hear the stigma attached to ‘Mental Health’ – we all have it and need to nurture it as like any other illness, Mental Ill Health is what we need to support when ill health occurs. Nearly 15% of people experience mental health problems... Read More
